Diabetes and the Eye: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Protecting Sight

In line with World Diabetes Day, this practical multidisciplinary CPD event will examine the relationship between diabetes and ocular health. Diabetic eye disease remains a leading cause of preventable blindness among working-age adults, making early detection, appropriate monitoring and effective communication between healthcare professionals especially important.
Designed for optometrists, dispensing opticians, GPs and endocrinologists, the session will cover diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular oedema, relevant risk factors, screening and monitoring pathways, referral thresholds and current treatment approaches. Delegates will explore the roles of laser, intravitreal therapy and surgery in the management of diabetic eye disease, with discussion focused on how these considerations inform assessment and referral.
The session will also consider how coordinated care across optometry, general practice, endocrinology and ophthalmology can support timely decision-making and patient-centred management. Through practical discussion, delegates will develop a clearer understanding of how to communicate risk, recognise warning signs and contribute to pathways designed to reduce avoidable vision loss.

About the speaker:
Farah Ibrahim, MBChB, MSc, DRCOphth, MRCOphth, FEBO, is a Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in diabetic eye disease. Farah graduated from the University of Leicester and completed ophthalmology training in Ireland. Farah spent eight years at the National Diabetic Treatment Clinic at the Royal Victoria Eye & Ear Hospital in Dublin and has further experience at the Institute of Eye Surgery/UPMC Kildare Hospital. Farah has led multidisciplinary clinical teams, including in Cork, and is a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and the Irish College of Ophthalmologists.

Eye symptoms are a frequent reason for consultation in general practice, yet deciding whether a patient requires routine, urgent or emergency ophthalmology assessment can be challenging. This focused webinar will review common ophthalmic complaints seen in primary care and provide practical guidance to support safe, timely and effective initial management.
The session will address red eye, flashes and floaters, visual disturbance, painful eye, eyelid concerns and suspected retinal pathology. It will consider initial assessment, key red flags, likely differentials, practical management and appropriate referral timeframes, helping GPs distinguish between presentations that may be managed conservatively and those requiring prompt specialist input.
The discussion is intended to support clinical confidence and informed decision-making while complementing, rather than replacing, local referral protocols and established pathways. Delegates will leave with a clearer framework for recognising sight-threatening presentations and communicating relevant clinical information when referral is required.

Mireia Roca Cabau, MD, PhD, is a Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in vitreoretinal and cataract surgery. Mireia completed advanced training at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, developing extensive experience in complex retinal conditions and urgent sight-threatening presentations. Mireia’s specialist expertise supports practical guidance for GPs assessing ophthalmic complaints and considering referral.
